An Indian-origin husband and wife from Leicestershire were killed after a light aircraft they were flying in crashed in a remote area of North Wales.

Sheetal Swali and Ketan Swali, both in their 50s and residents of Syston, were traveling from Tatenhill Airfield in Burton-upon-Trent to Caernarfon Airport aboard a hired Piper PA-28 aircraft operated through the Sherwood Flying Club, the BBC reported Aug. 19.

North Wales Police were alerted when the aircraft failed to arrive at its destination as scheduled.

The HM Coastguard notified police of a potential aviation incident, triggering a large-scale land and air search across the rugged Welsh terrain.

Search teams located the wreckage in an isolated location close to Trawsfynydd, where both husband and wife were found deceased.

During the opening of the inquest in Caernarfon, Assistant Coroner Sarah Riley shared initial details of the investigation. A provisional postmortem examination conducted by Home Office pathologist Dr. Brian Rogers determined the cause of death for both Sheetal and Ketan as major impact trauma.

Family members of the Leicestershire couple attended the formal proceedings remotely via video link. Further investigations into the cause of the crash by aviation authorities remain ongoing.
