A 22-year-old Indian student from the Indian state of Telangana was fatally shot during a robbery at a shopping mall in Chicago on Nov. 30.
The deceased, identified as Nukarapu Sai Teja, had reportedly been pursuing an MBA in the United States, having arrived in the country just three months ago.
According to reports, Sai Teja was working part-time at the cash counter of the mall when armed assailants entered, opened fire, and stole cash. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Consulate General of India in Chicago expressed its shock and grief over the incident in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter. "We are shocked and deeply sad at the murder of Indian Student Nukarapu Sai Teja. We demand immediate action against the culprits. Consulate will extend all possible help to the family and friends of the victim," the statement read.
US authorities have yet to release further details on the suspects in the Chicago shooting. Meanwhile, the Consulate has assured full support to repatriate Sai Teja’s remains back to his family in India.
This incident comes just a week after another Indian student from Telangana, 23-year-old Aryan Reddy, accidentally misfired a gun and died in Atlanta, Georgia.
The tragic incidents coincide with a surge in the number of Indian students in the US. Recent data revealed that India surpassed China as the leading country of origin for students in American universities for the 2023-24 academic year.
