Two brothers of Indian origin from East London have been sentenced for a series of sexual offences following a Metropolitan Police investigation that began with the discovery of child abuse videos on an electronic device.

Vruj Patel, 26, of Selsdon Road, E13, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Oct. 7 to 22 years in prison. He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register for life. His brother, Kishan Patel, 31, of the same address, was sentenced to 15 months for possessing indecent images of children and will be subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.

Vruj Patel had earlier pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including rape of a child under 13, assault by penetration, four counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, rape of a woman over 16, sexual assault by penetration, voyeurism, and possession of indecent images of children.

Detective Sergeant Rob Blant, who led the investigation, described Patel as “a cowardly, opportunistic offender who has preyed on vulnerable victims for his own sexual gratification".

“The threat he poses to women and children has been reflected in his sentence,” Blant said. “This is a fantastic example of a thorough and detailed investigation by Met detectives working to support victims of the most serious offending and safeguard the wider public from a dangerous offender.”

He added that “there are teams of dedicated, professional officers working across London who will leave no stone unturned to identify those who seek to commit offences against vulnerable people and bring offenders to justice.”

The investigation began on Feb. 1, 2020, after Greater Manchester Police alerted the Met to a third-party report about videos of child sexual abuse found on a device sent for repair. The device belonged to Kishan Patel, but analysis showed that Vruj appeared in the videos. Detectives identified him after his face was briefly visible at the end of one of the recordings.

Further searches of seized devices uncovered additional images and videos showing Vruj raping a young woman after a university night out and filming a young girl without her knowledge. He was identified by his clothing and distinctive jewellery seen in the footage.

Although most of the offences are believed to have occurred in 2018, police believe his offending may have continued more recently.

Following the sentencing, the Metropolitan Police launched an appeal for more victims to come forward. Detectives said there may be other instances where children were left in Vruj’s care either at his home or nearby. Anyone with relevant information has been urged to contact investigators.
