According to federal prosecutors, Kapoor traveled from Bombay, India, to New Orleans on or about Feb. 21, 2024, carrying a cellphone that contained digital videos and images showing minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
Prosecutors said Kapoor also downloaded a video depicting the sexual abuse of a child on April 11, 2024, using an internet protocol address linked to his residence in New Orleans.
Kapoor was arrested on Dec. 20, 2024, by special agents with Homeland Security Investigations and officers with the New Orleans Police Department.
In a recorded statement, Kapoor admitted that he had viewed and received child pornography on his cellphone through WhatsApp, according to the factual basis filed in court.
Federal prosecutors said Kapoor further admitted that he possessed more than 600 images depicting the sexual abuse of minors. Court records also state that the material included depictions involving sadistic or masochistic conduct and the sexual abuse of infants and toddlers.
Kapoor faces up to 20 years in prison on the transportation count. On the possession count, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 20 years in prison.
He also faces a fine of up to $250,000 on each count, supervised release of up to life, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee per count. He will also be required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
U.S. District Judge Greg G. Guidry is presiding over the case and has scheduled sentencing for June 17, 2026.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the New Orleans Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria M. Carboni of the Public Integrity Unit.
