Indian-American Milpitas Planning Commissioner Dipak Awasthi has endorsed Democrat Rakhi Israni’s bid to the U.S. Congress, Israni announced on April 16.
Awasthi, who unsuccessfully ran for city council in 2024, is a small business owner in the region. A resident of the region for close to 25 years, Awasthi has been involved in the City government since 2016.
Extending his support to Israni, Awasthi said, “As a Planning Commissioner I know what it means to make decisions that impact working families.”
He noted that Israni’s journey from building a successful business to contesting for public office reminds him of his own path from “immigrant entrepreneur to public servant.”

Awasthi continued, “We need leaders who understand both the struggles of affordability and the resolve to find real solutions. Rakhi will be that independent voice in Congress, someone who unites rather than divides, and delivers results for the East Bay!"
Israni, a long term resident of the neighbouring Fremont region, expressed gratitude for Awasthi’s “trust and support”. She remarked on X, “Honored to receive the endorsement of Planning Commissioner Dipak Awasthi from Milpitas!”
She added, “Dipak's path — from building a successful business to serving his community — is the kind of leadership CA-14 deserves.”
Israni is contesting for California’s 14th Congressional District which covers parts of the eastern Bay Area and includes diverse suburban communities with a significant population of professionals, immigrants, and families.
Israni is the founder of a national test-preparation company, which she said drew on her background as an educator and enabled her to mentor thousands of students.
Her legal work, her campaign highlights, has included representing underserved clients in family court and assisting elderly residents with estate planning.
She has also been active in local schools, serving as PTA president at the elementary, middle, and high school levels attended by her children.
