London's Metropolitan Police announced the appointment of Indian-origin man Hardev Virdee as the department's new Chief Strategy and Investment Officer on May 19.

Virdee will oversee the Met’s long-term strategy, investment, and commercial operations, while also leading strategic planning and resource allocation aimed at supporting frontline policing and public safety in London, the department noted.

Reacting to the appointment, Virdee said he was “delighted” to join the Metropolitan Police at a significant time for the organization and noted that he looked forward to continuing his commitment to public service after years in the National Health Service.

Talking about his new role, he added, "This is a challenging role, and I look forward to working closely with colleagues and partners to deliver the Met’s vision and bolster investments and resources to support the Met’s frontline policing."

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley praised Virdee’s appointment, saying he brought deep experience in strategic leadership, financial management, and organizational transformation.

Rowley noted, "He was hugely impressive in the selection process and that was not just the opinion of the panel I chaired, but also one of more junior colleagues – something we now routinely do in senior appointments."

He described Virdee's new role as "critical", highlighting how the department continues to "reform and deliver the best service for London against a backdrop of increasing demand and work to close a significant financial gap.”

Virdee joins the Met from Barts NHS Trust, where he played a key role in improving the trust’s financial position.

He is also a former recipient of the NHS Director of Finance of the Year award for his contributions as Chair of the NHS National Finance Academy.

In addition, Virdee currently serves as Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and is set to become its President later this year.
