Racist hate notes telling a family to “go back to India” were found outside a home in Epping, Melbourne, earlier this month, leaving a father fearful for his young family and prompting a police investigation.
The handwritten notes were discovered outside the family’s home on Feb. 3, according an exclusive report by news.com.au. The father, who moved to Australia nearly a decade ago and asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons, said he noticed small pieces of paper near his fence while cleaning his car. According to news.com.au, he said the language was “obscene, racist and deeply triggering.”
Some notes included phrases such as “go back to India” and “die Nazi,” according to news.com.au. No symbols or signs were displayed at the property. According to news.com.au, he said, “I really don’t understand the point of it. There’s no reason for something like this to happen.”

The man lives with a newborn baby, a toddler, and elderly family members. According to news.com.au, he said the incident made him feel unsafe and altered daily routines. “That night we didn’t go out for our usual walk,” he said, according to news.com.au. “I didn’t feel safe leaving my children at home.”
He shared the incident on a local Facebook community page to warn others. According to news.com.au, he said the post was not for sympathy but to alert neighbors. Comments on the post largely expressed support, while some suggested similar notes had been found nearby, including in a public garden bed near a civic center.
According to news.com.au, the father said he believes his family may have been targeted because they are the only Indian household in the immediate area. He now checks his property each morning and plans to install CCTV cameras.
The incident was reported to police. According to news.com.au, he said his first call was discouraging, but a second police station took the matter seriously and requested evidence.
Victoria Police said they received a report of offensive written material left in front gardens along a main road in Epping on Feb. 3. Police said the origin is unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
