Toronto Mayor declares October 20 as Diwali Day
Mayor Olivia Chow described the day as an opportunity to learn about the cultural celebrations that are associated with Diwali.

Toronto City Mayor Olivia Chow declared Oct. 20 as 'Diwali Day', recognizing and celebrating the historic contributions made by the Hindu-American community to the city.
As the city joined in on the festivities, the Mayor noted that the South Asian community was integral to the city's motto, ‘Diversity our Strength’.
Mayor Chow, in her proclamation, remarked that Diwali "Diwali brings together family, friends and community members throughout this special occasion sharing messages of hope and optimism."
She further said, "It is also a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the many rich customs and traditions that take place during this joyous celebration, reminding us that good always prevails."
The proclamation also highlighted the importance of Diwali as a symbol of triumph of light over darkness and good over evil while noting that, with the proclamation, the city joins millions of people across the globe and many in Toronto who are celebrating Diwali.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto shared the news and remarked on X, "This recognition celebrates the spirit of #Diwali of victory of light over darkness, and acknowledges the immense contribution of the Indian community to Toronto’s cultural and social fabric."
