NYC street named after Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur

A street in New York City has been officially named after Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru revered for his sacrifice and steadfast commitment to religious freedom and human rights.
The stretch at 114th Street and 101st Avenue in Richmond Hill, home to the historic Gurdwara Makhan Shah Lubana, will now be known as “Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg Way.” The designation marks the first time a New York City street has been named after a Sikh Guru.

The co-naming was enacted under Local Law 10 of 2025, part of the City Council’s bill (Int. No. 1153-2024) introduced by Council Member Shekar Krishnan and supported by over 40 council sponsors.
The motion was championed by Council Member Lynn Schulman, who represents District 29 and serves as Chair of the Council’s Health Committee.
“In a historic first, a NYC street is named after Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg,” Schulman wrote on X, calling the move an honor to the Guru’s “legacy of sacrifice, compassion, and unwavering stand for justice.”

Indian Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri also hailed the decision, describing it as “a proud moment for the Sikh Sangat.”
“This befitting honour highlights the significance of the Sikh community in Richmond Hill and recognises the contribution of Sikh heritage to the cultural fabric of New York City,” Puri said, recalling his years in the city as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2009 to 2013.

Community leaders and Sikh residents of Queens gathered over the weekend for the unveiling ceremony, which coincided with the Diwali celebrations—a symbolic moment of light and unity.
Social activist Mariam Singh expressed gratitude to Schulman and the New York City Council for their support. “A historic moment! 114th St in Queens… is renamed ‘Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg,’ honoring the 9th Sikh Guru’s legacy of sacrifice, compassion, and unwavering stand for justice,” she posted on X.
Guru Tegh Bahadur, known as Hind Di Chadar or “Shield of India,” is remembered for his martyrdom in defense of religious freedom in 1675.
