Indian community in Kano meets envoy to discuss initiatives

Leaders of the Indian Community Association (ICA) Kano met India's High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhishek Singh, to discuss the association's ongoing activities and initiatives aimed at supporting the Indian community in northern Nigeria, according to the High Commission of India in Nigeria.
Sharing details of the meeting on X, the High Commission described it as part of its continued engagement with the Indian diaspora across the region.

"Strengthening ties with the Indian community in Northern Nigeria," the High Commission wrote.
The delegation from ICA Kano included President Manoj Punjwani, Vice President Praful Sherkar, and Trustee and former President Praveen Reddy.
According to the High Commission, the association's representatives briefed Ambassador Singh on their ongoing community activities and initiatives in Kano, a major commercial hub in northern Nigeria that has long been home to an established Indian business community.
The High Commission said Singh commended the association's efforts and reaffirmed the mission's support for its work.
"The High Commissioner appreciated their efforts and assured them of the High Commission's full support for their endeavours to further strengthen the Indian community in Kano," the mission said.
The Indian Community Association serves as one of the principal organizations representing Indian nationals and people of Indian origin living in Kano. The association regularly coordinates cultural events, community welfare initiatives and engagement with the Indian diplomatic mission, while also assisting members on issues affecting the diaspora.
Kano has historically attracted Indian entrepreneurs and businesses involved in manufacturing, textiles, pharmaceuticals, engineering and trade, making it one of the key centers of the Indian diaspora in Nigeria.
The meeting formed part of the High Commission's broader outreach to Indian communities across Nigeria. Indian diplomatic missions routinely engage with diaspora organizations to understand community concerns, strengthen cultural and economic ties, and improve the delivery of consular services.
The High Commission tagged the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and other official government handles while sharing details of the meeting, underscoring its focus on diaspora engagement.
India's diplomatic mission in Abuja oversees relations with Nigeria and is also accredited to Benin and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). It regularly works with Indian community organizations across the region to promote cultural activities, business networking and community welfare.
While the High Commission confirmed that ICA Kano updated the envoy on its ongoing work, it did not disclose specific projects or initiatives discussed during the meeting. No details were provided on the association's membership, upcoming programmes or requests made to the mission.
The meeting reaffirmed the High Commission's continued engagement with Indian community organizations and its support for efforts to strengthen the Indian diaspora's presence and activities across northern Nigeria.
