Dr. Dattatreyudu Nori to headline New York Yoga Day event

The internationally renowned oncologist will serve as chief guest at a June 14 celebration featuring interfaith dialogue, meditation, and cultural performances

Dattatreyudu Nori, the internationally recognized cancer specialist and recipient of the 2026 Padma Bhushan, will be the chief guest at an International Yoga Day event in New York that aims to explore the spiritual and devotional dimensions of yoga.

Organized by ALotusInTheMud.com in association with the Consulate General of India in New York, the june 14 event is titled "The Heart of Yoga" and is being held at the Pt Jasraj Auditorium of Vedic Heritage Hanuman Mandir in Hempstead, New York.

Nori, who serves as an advisor on cancer services to the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, is the founder of three Shirdi Sai Baba temples in New York and New Jersey. He previously served as Chief of the Brachytherapy Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and is widely recognized for his contributions to oncology.

Organizers said the event will offer an alternative approach to International Yoga Day celebrations by focusing on yoga's spiritual, philosophical, and devotional traditions rather than physical postures alone.

The program will feature a panel discussion on devotion and spiritual evolution moderated by Parveen Chopra, founder and editor of ALotusInTheMud.com. Panelists include Lama Aria Drolma, a model-turned-ordained nun in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition and meditation teacher; Yakub Mathew, banker and author; Nayan Kisnadwala, finance executive, painter, and president of Vedic Heritage Hanuman Temple; and Sharon Epstein, who blends Judaism with yoga in her spiritual practice.

A loving-kindness meditation for world peace will be led by Lama Aria Drolma, a Tibetan Buddhist nun, teacher, and speaker. Cultural performances will include a Radha-Krishna dance presentation by Preya Patel and students from Vivarta Arts, chair yoga and ribbon dance demonstrations by Anne Moffatt, and devotional singing by Budh Prakash Jasuja.  

The free event is open to the public and will conclude with a vegetarian community meal.
