CGI Shanghai celebrates Yoga Day

The event featured a presentation on the benefits of yoga and the launch of a book by Siddharth Chatterjee, former United Nations Resident Coordinator in China.

The Consulate General of India in Shanghai celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 on June 21 Huangpu, China.

The flagship event, organized under this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” brought together 400 participants including members of the diplomatic corps, academics, yoga practitioners, members of the Indian diaspora, and friends of India in China.

Hosted at the Bund Finance Center (BFC), the event opened with remarks by Consul General Pratik Mathur, who described yoga as India’s enduring gift to the world and emphasized its growing importance in fostering holistic health, mental wellness, and healthy ageing. 

The Consul General also spotlighted yoga's ability to transcended borders, inspiring people across cultures to adopt more balanced and healthy lifestyles.

As part of the IDY celebration, attendees took part in a guided yoga session featuring breathing exercises, asanas, and meditation, highlighting the role of regular practice in supporting physical health, mental well-being, and healthy ageing.

The event also featured a presentation on the benefits of yoga and the launch of a book by Siddharth Chatterjee, former United Nations Resident Coordinator in China. 

In his address, Chatterjee spoke about yoga’s transformative effect on personal well-being and its increasing recognition worldwide as a tool for preventive healthcare and healthy living.

Participants were also introduced to mindfulness and inner well-being through a guided meditation session led by Sister Sapna of the Brahma Kumaris.

The event featured a vibrant cultural programme showcasing India's diverse heritage. Highlights included a captivating Manipuri dance performance inspired by Khongjom Lal, a traditional ballad commemorating the bravery of Manipuri warriors during the historic Battle of Khongjom in 1891. 

The cultural segment concluded with an Indian classical music recital by renowned flautist Rajat Prasanna, accompanied by tabla and a unique Indo-Chinese musical collaboration, celebrating cultural exchange and artistic harmony.

Talking about the event, the Indian Consulate in Shanghai said in a statement, "The celebration was the culmination of a series of activities organized by the Consulate General of India in Shanghai and other cities in the Eastern China region to mark the 12th International Day of Yoga and reaffirm India’s commitment to promoting yoga as a universal practice for health, harmony, and sustainable well-being."
