The Maryland Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives (GOCI) attended the opening day of the three-day annual Basant Kirtan Darbar across Maryland and Virginia, commemorating the 350th anniversary of the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib and the Nanakshahi New Year 558.
Representatives from the Maryland Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives, including Interfaith Outreach Director Lora Hargrove, alongside several GOCI commission members, joined the congregation.
The GOCI connects Marylanders to economic and volunteer services and facilitates community engagement within the executive branch.
The event was organized by the Guru Ram Das Foundation in association with the Sri Harmandir Sahib Academy to honor the legacy of the ninth Sikh Guru.

Sawinder Singh mentioned that the primary goal of the event was to provide a platform for the community to reflect on the Guru’s teachings through the medium of Gurbani Kirtan.
The three-day event featured a lineup of ragis who delivered renditions of Gurbani to attendees. The Kirtan jathas included Sawinder Singh, Harpreet Singh and Siripal Singh, all Hazoori ragis of Darbar Sahib.
Other notable participants included Karanjeet Singh from the United Kingdom, Guneet Kaur from Denver, Colorado, Baljeet Singh from Los Angeles, California, and Gagandeep Singh from Sacramento, California.
The program was hosted across three major gurdwaras to ensure accessibility for the regional Sikh community.
It began on the first day at the Sikh Association of Baltimore in Randallstown, Maryland, followed by the second day at Gurdwara Gurshabad Parkash (Sikh Learning Center) in Glen Burnie, Maryland, and concluded on the third day at Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Fairfax, Virginia.
The organizers extended their gratitude to the management of all three gurdwaras and the state officials for their support.
