Starlink, the Elon Musk-owned satellite Internet provider, will use Aadhaar authentication for verifying its customers in India. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has approved Starlink Satellite Communication Pvt Ltd as a Sub-Authentication User Agency and Sub-eKYC User Agency.
The agreement was formalized in New Delhi in the presence of UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, Deputy Director General Manish Bhardwaj, and Parnil Urdhwareshe, Director of Starlink India.
According to UIDAI, Aadhaar will allow Starlink to complete customer onboarding in a paperless and compliant manner. “Aadhaar, one of the most trusted digital identity systems, will ensure that customer onboarding is quick, paperless, and compliant with Know Your Customer (KYC) norms,” the authority said in a statement.
The authentication process will be voluntary, in line with existing rules. Aadhaar-based e-KYC will help Starlink meet regulatory requirements while connecting households, businesses, and institutions with satellite internet services.
Officials said the move underlines the growing role of Aadhaar in India’s digital ecosystem. “Aadhaar, the foundation of India’s digital public infrastructure, has been a catalyst of ease of living and ease of doing business. Its face authentication solution is now gaining momentum faster due to its ease of usage and convenience for Aadhaar number holders,” the statement noted.
UIDAI added that the decision demonstrates the scalability of India’s digital infrastructure. “The use of Aadhaar authentication by a global satellite internet provider demonstrates the scalability and reliability of India’s digital infrastructure. It highlights how Aadhaar can enable innovation in service delivery while ensuring transparency and accountability.”
