India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra on Jan. 30 said that the upcoming India AI Summit which is scheduled to take place next month in New Delhi, is of great significance as this will be the first time that the summit is taking place in a Global South country.
Kwatra was speaking at an event organized by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). The daylong event saw several panels comprising of industry leaders, diplomats and other stakeholders discuss AI policy and governance issues.
Referring to the expected participation in the upcoming summit, Kwatra said, “We are expecting people who actually lead AI technology world – not just in terms of industry CEOs, but also those leaders who think about AI, who are researching AI, who think about how this research could lead to new dimensions of AI going forward…there is a spectrum of tech leadership.”
The India AI Impact Summit is scheduled to be held in the national capital from February 16 to February 20. In a statement issued earlier, the Indian government said that the summit aims to “democratize Ai and bridge the emerging AI divide.”

While on a panel with France’s Ambassador to the U.S., Laurent Bili, Kwatra further said, “One central aspect which actually drives innovation is that Indian society is at ease in adopting technology and diffusing it at scale.”
“The way societies are emerging, technology will play a far more consequential role, than it already does, in building of new products, delivery of services and generation of new industries,” Kwatra said.
The two envoys also spoke on the recently announced India-European Council Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Indian envoy terming it as a “comprehensive” one.
Titled, “Exploring Global AI Policy Priorities Ahead of the India AI Impact Summit,” the CSIS event also saw officials from major companies like Microsoft and Google talk about industry perspectives.
David Weller, senior director of emerging tech, competitiveness and sustainability policy at Google said that, like technological changes that have happened before, development of AI will also see significant transformations.
“A dynamic economy will have those kinds of changes. Some jobs are going to be lost, some new categories formed, and the nature of some jobs changed. We know there’s going to be a huge transformation,” Weller said while adding that it is essential to ensure that relevant social nets are present to tackle the changes.
