India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations / Provided
The Consulate General of India in Los Angeles marked India’s 80th Independence Day on Aug. 15 with a flag-hoisting ceremony at its newly established premises, attended by more than 250 members of the Indian diaspora, Indian citizens and friends of India.
The program opened with Vande Mataram, followed by the hoisting of the tricolour by Consul General Dr. K. J. Srinivasa. Attendees then joined in singing Jana Gana Mana, India’s national anthem.
CG Srinivasa read the Independence Day message of President Droupadi Murmu, who reflected on India’s journey since independence and the national goal of building a developed India, or Viksit Bharat, by 2047.

The President’s message emphasized the principle of Antyodaya and the need to ensure that the benefits of development reach every section of society. It also highlighted democracy, equality, inclusion and public participation as central to India’s continued progress.
In his remarks, Srinivasa highlighted India’s development across sectors, including digital payments, renewable energy, healthcare, entrepreneurship, youth development, space and technology. He also noted growing investor confidence and efforts to safeguard the country’s national interests.
Women’s economic participation and leadership were among the themes discussed, including initiatives such as the Lakhpati Didi program. The event also highlighted opportunities for young people through sports, entrepreneurship and technological innovation, as well as expanded healthcare access and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for senior citizens.
The gathering also recognized the contributions and dedication of India’s Armed Forces and reflected on national security, including recent Operation Sindoor.
The ceremony concluded with a reaffirmation of the Indian diaspora’s connection to its heritage and its pride in India’s progress. The attendees honored the sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters and celebrated the country’s continuing journey toward a more developed, inclusive and innovative future.
