An Indian national was among 65 people arrested during a four-day U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Connecticut targeting individuals with serious criminal backgrounds.
Nileshkumar Pravinbhai Patel, 38, was taken into custody in Norwalk on charges of selling and possessing with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of cannabis. He remains in federal custody pending removal proceedings.
The enforcement sweep, called Operation Broken Trust, ran from Aug. 12 to 15, netted offenders charged or convicted of crimes including sexual assault, kidnapping, robbery, drug trafficking, weapons violations, and gang activity.
“Connecticut is a safer place thanks to the hard work and determination of the men and women of ICE and our federal partners,” said Patricia H. Hyde, acting field office director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston.
The operation unfolded against the backdrop of debate over Connecticut’s Trust Act, which restricts local police from cooperating with ICE detainers unless there is a judicial warrant or convictions for serious felonies. ICE officials said these limits force federal agents to conduct at-large arrests in neighborhoods, which they argue increases risks for officers and the public.
Governor Ned Lamont has rejected the “sanctuary state” label, saying the Trust Act balances public safety with constitutional protections. Connecticut was recently removed from a federal list of “sanctuary jurisdictions,” reflecting ongoing national debates over immigration enforcement and states’ rights.
