Over the past few years, the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program has become a popular pathway for international students to gain work experience in the US after graduation. This is particularly true for students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, who are eligible for an extended OPT period. For many of these students, a successful application for the H-1B visa is the next crucial step.

However, the recent proclamation by President Donald Trump has created significant uncertainty and concern among Indian students and professionals.

Last week’s proclamation, to impose an additional $100,000 fee on H-1B visa applications, has caused widespread panic and confusion, especially among Indian students on STEM OPT who were recently selected in the H-1B annual lottery. Although the US government has released some details clarifying which categories of H-1B visa holders will be affected, many questions remain unanswered.
