Indian-origin researcher finds gene target to restore brain function

In preclinical research published in Nature, the team identified genes involved in these neurons’ plasticity and then demonstrated the benefits of overexpressing one key gene.

A team of researchers led by Indian-origin investigator Amar Sahay has discovered a convergent mechanism for cognitive restoration and seizure suppression in neurodevelopmental disorders, opening a possible path for the development of new therapeutics for these conditions.

“Cognitive impairment and seizures are hallmarks of neurodevelopmental disorders and represent a large, unmet clinical need,” said senior author Amar Sahay, PhD, of the Department of Psychiatry at Mass General Brigham and an associate member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.

“We show in proof-of-concept studies that targeting one candidate gene could be sufficient to reverse developmental deficits, even in adulthood,” he said.

Some of the symptoms of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) such as autism spectrum disorder and epilepsy may result from dysfunction of certain neurons in the brain and their ability to change their properties in response to experiences—a process called experience-dependent plasticity.
