Even before former US Congressman Eric Swalwell withdrew from the California gubernatorial race, his campaign coordinator, Sunjay Muralitharan, had resigned and distanced himself.
In a strong statement, Muralitharan, the most recent outgoing president of the College Democrats of America, said about his departure: “I joined the Swalwell campaign to help elect a principled leader who would fight for the next generation. He had been my Congressman since I was in elementary school, and I believed—as many prominent Democrats did—that he was a man of character. These allegations, however, made it clear he is not.”

Muralitharan added that he has always stood with survivors and firmly believes that sexual assault has no place in public office, let alone the governor’s mansion. “Consequently, I resigned promptly and publicly called for him to drop out of the race and resign from Congress.
As young Democrats, it is our responsibility to build a party rooted in dignity and respect; that requires opposing perpetrators, no matter how powerful they may be,” he said in an interview.
