Neelakshi Majumdar, an Indian-origin mechanical engineer and assistant professor at the University of Arkansas, is examining why small aircraft crash so often in the United States. Her latest research focuses on the human factors behind inflight loss of control, a leading cause of fatal accidents in general aviation.

“On average, four planes crash every day in the United States, and nearly all of them are single-engine general aviation planes,” Majumdar told the University of Arkansas. “About 20 percent of these crashes involve inflight loss of control — and nearly half of those are fatal.”
