‘Life of Pi,’ the first Broadway play featuring a majority South Asia cast, took home three awards to create history at the 2023 Tony Awards which was held at the United Palace Theatre in New York.
The play received nominations in five different design categories and won three of them- Best Lighting Design in a Play (Tim Lutkin), Best Sound Design of a Play (Carolyn Downing), and Best Scenic Design in a Play (Tim Hatley and Andrzej Goulding).
The stage adaptation of Life of Pi, written by British Asian playwright Lolita Chakrabarti, is based on Yann Martel’s best-selling book of the same name.
The play revolves around a 16-year-old lad, Pi, who finds himself alone on a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with the most unlikely of allies, a Royal Bengal tiger. The two must learn to trust one another in order to survive because time and nature are working against them.
