Indian archer shatters U-18 world record at World Cup

The 16 year-old archer broke the record during the women's compound qualification round at the Archery World Cup 2023 stage 3 in Medellin, Colombia.

Indian archer Aditi Gopichand Swami created history by breaking the Under 18 world record in the women's compound qualification round at the Archery World Cup 2023 stage 3 in Medellin, Colombia. The 16-year-old prodigy showcased her skills and scored a remarkable 711 points out of 720, surpassing the previous world record of 705 set by Liko Arreola of the United States in May.

Swami's outstanding performance not only secured her a place at the top of the 72-arrow qualification but also positioned her just two points short of the senior record held by Colombian archer Sara Lopez, who boasts a score of 713.

The Indian women's compound team demonstrated their collective prowess by securing the top spot in the qualification round. Jyothi Surekha Vennam finished second with an impressive score of 708, while Praneet Kaur claimed the sixth position with 700 points. Avneet Kaur secured the 28th spot with a commendable score of 684.

Swami said, “I didn’t expect that I was going to shoot like that and that score, but now I’m very happy with that score because I’m only 16 years old,”.

She is making her senior team debut at the Medellin meet. Despite missing the world record set by the Republic of Korea (2120) during the Asia Cup in Singapore last week by just one point, the Indian team showcased their potential for a podium finish.

The Indian compound men's team, consisting of Abhishek Verma, Ojas Pravin Deotale, and Samadhan Jawkar, showcased their strength and determination by securing the second spot in the team qualification round. Their cumulative score of 2112 points put them in close competition with the leading team from the United States.

As the Archery World Cup 2023 progresses, Indian archers continue to exhibit their remarkable talent and determination. Swami's world record-breaking performance builds up the nation's hopes for further success in this tournament.
