Popular Bollywood playback singer Arijit Singh shocked his fans by suddenly announcing on Jan. 27 that he would no longer take on new playback assignments.

The shock was not just about the loss of a singer. It was about the rupture of a system that rarely allows its most successful voices to step away. Indian playback singing is built on continuity, not exits. Legends fade, voices age, styles soften, but they almost never quit.
