Soumith Chintala has been appointed chief technology officer of California-based Thinking Machines Lab, CEO Mira Murati announced on X.
The announcement also confirmed the exit of co-founder Barret Zoph, who had served as the company’s CTO before Chintala’s appointment.

Announcing the decision, Murati wrote on X, “Soumith Chintala will be the new CTO of Thinking Machines. He is a brilliant and seasoned leader who has made important contributions to the AI field for over a decade, and he’s been a major contributor to our team.”
She added, “We could not be more excited to have him take on this new responsibility.”

Chintala brings more than two decades of industry experience. He previously worked at Meta and New York University, and left Meta in November 2025. He later joined Murati’s team at Thinking Machines Lab as a member of the technical staff and was recently elevated to the CTO role.
He holds an engineering degree from the Vellore Institute of Technology in Tamil Nadu and a computer science degree from New York University.
