A heartfelt message from Dr. Anish Pillai, Consultant Pediatrician at Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar, who has been caring for little Khushi since birth.
“Her fight is our fight” - and with your support, we can give Khushi a chance at life and laughter.
We have less than four months to save Baby Khushi’s life!
She must receive a life-saving gene therapy before she turns two years old or her chance to walk will be gone forever and eventually her life will collapse.
Khushi is just 20 months old. She can sit crawl and even stand for a few seconds with support but she cannot walk. Each time she tries her tiny legs tremble and her eyes fill with determination and frustration. Her smile never fades but her strength is slowly slipping away.
I am writing this as Khushi’s aunt on behalf of her father my brother whose world now revolves around one prayer: “Please let my little girl walk one day.”
They never imagined their first child would be fighting for her life before she could even take her first steps.
A few months ago, the doctors confirmed what no parent should ever have to hear.
Khushi has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) a rare genetic disease that weakens the muscles needed for movement swallowing and breathing. Her test showed that she was born without the SMN1 gene the one that keeps motor neurons alive. Without treatment the muscles slowly lose function, and the child loses the ability to move breathe and survive.
There is only one treatment in the world that can stop this. It is called Zolgensma a one-time gene therapy that replaces the missing SMN1 gene. It is one injection that can change everything. It can give Khushi the chance to stand walk and live the life she deserves.
But this miracle costs over 1.1 million dollars and time is running out. The treatment must be given before she turns two. We have less than four months to raise this amount and give her that one shot at life.
Why we are asking for your help:
Khushi is still fighting with all her might. The fact that she can crawl and sit means that there is hope. Her neurons are still alive. With timely treatment she can recover and live like any other child.
