White House lays off thousands of US government workers, blaming shutdown

October 2025 140 views 1MIN29SEC

The Trump administration announced on Friday that layoffs of federal workers had begun amid the ongoing U.S. government shutdown. President Donald Trump's budget director Russell Vought wrote on social media (quote) "The RIFs have begun." RIF is an abbreviation for "reductions in force." Vought did not provide any further details regarding these layoffs. But a White House budget office spokesperson characterized the layoffs as "substantial" in number. The move comes on the tenth day of a government shutdown amid a budget standoff between Trump and his Republican Party, which controls both chambers of Congress, and Democratic Party lawmakers. "And we'll be making cuts that will be permanent." Trump has frequently threatened to dismiss federal employees since government funding ceased on October 1. He said on Thursday that cuts would be made to what he called popular Democratic government programs. "We'll be cutting some very popular Democrat programs that aren't popular with Republicans, frankly." Labor unions that represent federal workers have sued to stop the layoffs, arguing that any downsizing during a government shutdown would be illegal. Reductions made now come on top of the approximately 300,000 federal civilian workers expected to leave their positions this year due to a downsizing initiative launched by Trump.
