दलाई लामा तिब्बती बौद्ध धर्म के सबसे बड़े आध्यात्मिक गुरु है, जिनका चयन पारंपरिक रूप से पुनर्जन्म के आधार पर होता है। लेकिन पिछले कुछ वर्षों से चीन इस प्रक्रिया में दखल देने की कोशिश कर रहा है। वहीं अब भारत ने साफ शब्दों में कहा है कि दलाई लामा के उत्तराधिकारी का निर्णय पूरी तरह से तिब्बती समुदाय का हक है, न कि किसी सरकार का। भारत सरकार के एक वरिष्ठ अधिकारी ने कहा- "दलाई लामा के उत्तराधिकारी को लेकर जो भी निर्णय होगा, वह पूरी तरह से उनका व्यक्तिगत और धार्मिक अधिकार है। इसमें किसी बाहरी दबाव या दखल की कोई जगह नहीं है।
