The University of Pittsburgh has appointed Indian-American academician Vikas Khanna as the interim chair of the department of civil and environmental engineering (CEE).
As interim chair, Khanna will oversee departmental operations, guide academic programs, support faculty development, and ensure continuity in leadership while a national search for a permanent chair is underway, the University said in a statement.

A faculty member at Pitt since 2010, Khanna has played a key role in the department's growth and academic development. He previously served as the associate chair of graduate studies and has chaired multiple faculty search committees. His leadership extends beyond the university, with active roles in subdivisions of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Khanna’s research focuses on sustainability, life cycle assessment, and modeling the impacts of emerging environmental and chemical technologies. He is actively involved with the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation and the Pittsburgh Water Collaboratory. Since 2017, he has served as an editor for Resources, Conservation and Recycling, a leading journal in sustainable engineering.
He holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from The Ohio State University and is a former National Academy of Sciences Graduate Fellow.
Khanna will succeed Radisav Vidic, P.E., who has served as department chair for 23 years and will return to the faculty on June 30.
