A new Times Square billboard has ignited political controversy by calling on New Yorkers to escape Zohran Mamdani’s “socialist tyranny” and relocate to Ohio.

The ad, which debuted July 14 in one of the city’s most visible tourist hubs, was paid for by “Vivek Super PAC — Victors, not Victims.” The group supports Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign for governor of Ohio and appears to be positioning him as a direct contrast to Mamdani, the 33-year-old Democratic Socialist who recently won the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City.

According to the New York Post, the $50,000 ad describes Mamdani as a "radical socialist" and suggests a choice between Ramaswamy’s conservative platform and Mamdani’s progressive policies.

Both the Indian-origin politicos have gained national attention as rising figures in their respective parties.

A  biotech entrepreneur and political newcomer who rose to prominence in the 2024 presidential primaries, Ramaswamy has set the record for the largest first-quarter fundraising total for any gubernatorial candidate in Ohio history. His campaign emphasized that the $9.7 million figure does not include any personal contributions from Ramaswamy himself.

Mamdani, a state assemblymember, has gained support for his mayoral campaign through grassroots campaigning, tenant advocacy, and calls for structural changes in policing and housing. Several Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, have endorsed his campaign to become the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of New York City.
