Brown University has appointed three Indian-origin women, Kim Fernandes, Saloni Gupta, and Divya Murthy, as part of its new faculty cohort for the 2025-26 academic year. They are among 38 new scholars joining the university across departments and schools, according to an announcement from Brown.
Provost Francis J. Doyle III said in a statement that faculty members play a central role in the institution’s mission. “Our faculty are central to Brown’s research and educational mission. These new members of our community are vital to the continued growth of Brown as a preeminent research university that is dedicated to the education of future generations,” Doyle said. “I am excited that they have chosen to join our university.”
Fernandes has been appointed Assistant Professor of Anthropology. Brown said their work examines the intersections of disability, data, and technology, with a focus on urban India. Their first book project studies how national enumeration and identification infrastructures interact with everyday experiences of disability. Fernandes has also begun collaborative research on neurotechnologies and disability in North America, centering perspectives of disabled people.
Gupta has joined as the Jonathan M. Nelson Assistant Professor of Education and Entrepreneurship. In her statement to Brown, Gupta said, “My work lies at the intersection of education, innovation, and economic development. I examine how education systems develop higher-order skills for a changing labor market and how new technologies influence the scaling of educational innovations.” She added that her work has been supported by the Weiss Fund for Development Economics, the National Academy of Education, and Stanford University’s King Center on Global Development, among others.
Gupta completed her Ph.D. in Economics and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, in 2024 and pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford. Before her doctoral studies, she taught at a juvenile home, launched teacher training programs, worked as a software engineer, and served as a policy consultant for Indian state governments.
Murthy has been appointed Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (Research). A graduate of Delhi University with a Ph.D. in biotechnology from India’s Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, her research focuses on pancreatic cancer, tumor microenvironments, and metabolic reprogramming.
According to her professional statement, “My mission is to advance the understanding of tumor microenvironment-mediated metabolic reprogramming and identify novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers for this deadly disease.”
Brown said the new faculty members bring expertise across a wide range of disciplines, from neuroscience to Hispanic studies to biostatistics, strengthening the university’s teaching and research capacity.
