Texas governor reappoints Surendra Varma to key medical review committee

Varma has previously served as a gubernatorial appointee on the TMB District Three Review Committee, TMB, and the Task Force on Infectious Disease Preparedness and Response.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has brought back Indian American physician Surendra Varma to play a leading role in his administration's health care efforts, reappointing Varma to the Texas Medical Board's (TMB) District Three Review Committee.

The Texas Medical Board District Three Review Committee is a regional committee of the Texas Medical Board that reviews complaints, investigations and disciplinary matters involving physicians and health care professionals within its jurisdiction before making recommendations to the full board.

The committee helps oversee medical licensing standards, professional conduct and patient safety across the state of Texas.

Previously, he served as a gubernatorial appointee on the TMB District Three Review Committee, TMB, and the Task Force on Infectious Disease Preparedness and Response.

Varma, along with his newly reappointed peer Sharon Carr, will serve until Jan. 15, 2032.

Surendra Varma, M.D., of Lubbock, is the executive associate dean for graduate medical education at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) and is a Grover E. Murray Professor and Ted Hartman Endowed Chair in Medical Education at TTUHSC.

He is a member of the American Pediatric Society, Society for Pediatric Research and Endocrine Society. Varma is a member and former president of the American Diabetes Association and a member and former Texas affiliate chair of endocrinology for the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Varma received a Bachelor of Science in physics, chemistry, biology and English from the University of Lucknow, and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Doctor of Medicine in pediatrics from King George Medical University (KGMU).
