A Telangana student was fatally shot by police in Santa Clara, California, on Sept. 3 after reportedly attacking his roommate with a knife.
Mohammed Nizamuddin, 32, was reportedly struck by four rounds by the police. His family learned of his death two weeks later.
The family has appealed to the Indian government to repatriate the remains. “We are in touch with the family; we also understand that an investigation is underway by local authorities. You would have also seen that the local police department has put out a video statement, giving details of the circumstances. We are also in touch with the family and will render all possible assistance in this matter,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on the matter.

The Santa Clara Police Department (SCPD) said officers responded to a 911 call on Sept 3 reporting a stabbing by Nizamuddin, who was pinning down his injured roommate while holding a knife.
"SCPD officers came, confronted the suspect, and engaged in an officer-involved shooting. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital and later confirmed dead," the SCPD statement added.
Nizamuddin traveled to the United States in 2016 to pursue higher education. He graduated from the Florida Institute of Technology and worked as a software developer for a reputable company.
