Shawnee State University (SSU) has announced the publication of two major works on Indian history by professor Lavanya Vemsani.
Vemsani, professor of history and religious studies, has offered innovative approaches to understanding India’s past in Reframing India in World History and Handbook of Indian History, which to decolonize long-standing historical narratives.

“I dedicated this work to all the colonized peoples of the world since colonization may have ended but many of the colonized nations, even though independent, carry the burden of colonial knowledge which they must destroy to find true independence,” said Vemsani.
The Handbook of Indian History, published by Springer, presents a broad and detailed account of India’s history, from early civilization to post-Independence. It features contributions from leading international scholars and integrates new data to provide a deeper, more inclusive analysis of historical developments.
Published by Lexington Press and Bloomsbury, Reframing India in World History explores indigenous patterns of Indian civilization from ancient times to the present. It challenges outdated colonial interpretations and introduces fresh perspectives supported by new evidence.
Vemsani, who joined SSU in 2006, is widely recognized for her academic contributions. In 2021, she was honored with a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award in History, joining a distinguished group of scholars conducting global research.
