Trump ratings soar in India, fall flat in the West
Indians gave high marks to Trump despite apprehensions about his economic policies, especially those targeting India.

The Munich Security Report 2026 was recently released, and the report presented U.S. President Donald Trump in a whole new light. While most Western democracies were not too keen on Trump’s return to office or his administration’s decisions, Indians stood apart and offered a certain degree of support to the American president.
In contrast to most countries, an overwhelming 38 percent of respondents from India claimed that Trump’s policies were good for their country, and 36 percent believed that his policies were good for the world. While perceptions of Trump’s geopolitical impact remained comparatively less negative in India, the report highlighted heightened concern over his economic policies — particularly after the Trump administration imposed 50 percent tariffs on India.

Trump’s ratings in India are in sharp contrast with ratings in countries such as Canada, France, Germany and Japan, where agreement largely hovers around 10 to 15 percent.
The Munich Security Index (MSI), which surveys public attitudes across G7 and major Global South countries, also highlighted long-standing skepticism toward the Western “rules-based order,” which policymakers have criticized for selective application and double standards.
The report cited India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s remark that the existing order has often appeared “anarchic and permeated by double standards” from India’s perspective.
