U.S. President Donald Trump, on April 16, congratulated the newly appointed Delhi lieutenant governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, a former diplomat who has spent time representing Indian interests in the United States.
Sandhu took oath as the 23rd lieutenant governor of Delhi on March 11. He replaced former Lt. Gov. Vinai Kumar Saxena, who has now been appointed as the lieutenant governor of Ladakh.
Trump hailed Sandhu as a “seasoned diplomat and former ambassador to the United States” and highlighted the “deep commitment to strengthening the U.S.-India relationship” shown by Sandhu, in his Truth Social post.

Sandhu, who was appointed India’s ambassador to the United States in February 2020 and stayed in office till January 2024, served, for most part, when former President Joe Biden was in the White House. However, he also served multiple stints at the Embassy of India, Washington, D.C., before being appointed as the Indian ambassador.
He also served at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York City from July 2005 to February 2009, where he worked on multilateral diplomacy and global policy issues.
