Congressman Shri Thanedar will host a press conference in Detroit on July 7 urging the Trump administration to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

The bridge, which connects Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, is expected to become a key trade gateway between the United States and Canada.

The opening was delayed last month after the United States and Canada postponed its launch following objections from President Donald Trump amid broader trade disputes between the two countries.

According to Thanedar's office, the press conference will be held at Riverside Park and will be followed by a public town hall at Wayne County Community College's Downtown Campus. Reps. Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02), the ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, and Lou Correa (CA-46) will join Thanedar at both events.

The lawmakers will conduct a site visit before calling on President Donald Trump to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge as an operational U.S. Customs and Border Protection port of entry. They said the crossing is ready to begin operations and would facilitate trade and travel between the United States and Canada while strengthening the economies of both countries.

The C$6.4 billion (about US$4.7 billion) bridge is one of North America's largest infrastructure projects. Built with Canadian financing, it is expected to ease congestion at the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, two of the busiest commercial border crossings between the two countries, while streamlining the movement of goods along a trade corridor that handles hundreds of billions of dollars in annual commerce.

Although the U.S. Department of Homeland Security finalized a rule earlier this year designating the Gordie Howe International Bridge as a U.S. Customs and Border Protection port of entry, the crossing has yet to open.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has said it will announce when the bridge becomes operational.

In February, he joined Michigan's Democratic congressional delegation in urging the administration to open the crossing as planned, arguing that it would support jobs, strengthen trade and serve as a key economic driver for Michigan and the broader U.S. economy.

He has also introduced the Bike the Border Act, legislation that would facilitate non-motorized crossings across the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

The press conference will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Riverside Park in Detroit. It will be followed by a town hall from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Frank Hayden Community Room at Wayne County Community College's Downtown Campus.
