Strong community turnout for Yoga Day celebrations in Edison, NJ

More than 450 participants dressed in white gathered at the Sheraton Hotel in Edison, New Jersey, on June 14 to celebrate the 12th annual International Day of Yoga. 

The event was organized by Indian-American community organizations–Indo American Cultural Association of Edison NJ, World Vegan Vision, Federation of Indian Senior Associations of North America (FISANA), World Yoga Federation, Gujarati Samaj, Indo American Senior Council of Edison, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light, YMCA Metuchen/Edison, Gandhi Samaj of South Gujarat  in partnership with the consulate.The program began with a traditional sitar and tabla performance by Aum Ghosh and Naren, followed by a lamp-lighting and remarks from organizers and guests.

The event featured dual-stage yoga and wellness sessions including yoga, meditation, pranayama, breathing exercises, Ayurveda, laughter yoga, and mindful movement practices.

Representatives from organizations including Isha Foundation, Brahma Kumaris, Vihangam Yog and YMCA Edison-Metuchen led many of the activities.

Among the chief guests were Acharya Dr. Lokesh Muni of Ahimsa Vishwa Bharti, wellness advocate Mark Becker and Consul Shruti Pandey of the Consulate General of India in New York. Community leaders and supporters also offered messages promoting peace, wellness and social harmony.

A highlight of the event was the venue's transition to an entirely vegan food service for the day. Organizers said the initiative, supported by Sheraton owner Atul Dangayach and manager Jassi Ahluwalia, extended beyond event participants to include the hotel's restaurant and VIP club lounge.

The event was coordinated by Nitin Vyas with support from volunteers and representatives of several community organizations, media partners and local businesses.
