Indian-origin writer Sunder Katwala joins UK community fund board

Indian-origin writer and British Future founder Sunder Katwala has been appointed to the board of the National Lottery Community Fund, one of the United Kingdom's major organizations responsible for distributing grants to community groups and charities.
Katwala, 52, began his four-year appointment this week. As a board member, he will work with chair Dame Julia Cleverdon and other board members on the organization's strategy, performance and delivery.

Katwala is the director of British Future, an independent, nonpartisan think tank and charity that focuses on issues including identity, immigration and integration.
He is also the author of 'How to Be a Patriot' and has written extensively about immigration and social cohesion in Britain. His work has included discussion of issues connected to immigration, identity and the relationship between different communities in the country.
Since May 2026, Katwala has served as a commissioner of the Equality and Human Rights Commission. He is also a member of the Independent Commission on Community and Cohesion.
His previous work has included associations with the Fabian Society and the Foreign Policy Centre.
In his new role, Katwala will help oversee the National Lottery Community Fund's strategy and performance as part of its board. The appointment places him among the board members responsible for working with the chair on the organization's overall direction and delivery.
