Indian-origin student stabbed to death in Canada

The Consulate General of India in Toronto said it is assisting the family and facilitating the repatriation of her remains.

A 22-year-old international student from India was stabbed to death in Canada's Niagara region on May 15.

Vidhi Kalpeshbhai Megha, a resident of Borsad in Gujarat, was killed on May 15 in St. Catharines, Ontario. Her family has alleged that she was attacked by a drug dealer after refusing to give him money. The claim has not been confirmed by Canadian authorities.

According to the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), officers responded to a residence near Lakeshore Road and Lake Street in St. Catharines at approximately 4:15 p.m. on May 15 after receiving reports of two people without vital signs.



Police said an adult woman was found dead inside the residence, while an adult man was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The NRPS Homicide Unit subsequently took over the investigation.

On May 18, detectives arrested Joshua St Omer, 40, of St. Catharines. He has been charged with second-degree murder and remains in custody. Police said he was scheduled to appear for a bail hearing at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on May 19.

At the time of the arrest, police had not publicly released the identity of the victim.

Vidhi had moved to Canada to pursue higher education and completed a three-year business management program. She later enrolled in a Personal Support Worker (PSW) Honours course.

Reports said her family in India was informed of her death more than 10 days after the incident.

Expressing condolences, the Consulate General of India in Toronto said, "The Consulate is deeply saddened to learn about the death of an Indian international student, Vidhi Megha in St Catherine, Niagara."

The consulate said it was in contact with family members in India and Canada and was providing assistance, including support for the transportation of her mortal remains to India.

The NRPS said its homicide investigation remains ongoing and appealed to members of the public with information about the case to come forward.
