The High Commission of India in the United Kingdom is organizing special screenings of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s movies on March 21 and 22.
The two-day event will showcase four popular works, namely, 'Charulata,' 'Kapurush,' 'Mahanagar' and 'Nayak.' These movies are often listed among the greatest works of Indian cinema, especially from Bengali cinema of the 1960s.
The High Commission will organize the screenings at the Court House Hotel in London.

Released in 1964, 'Charulata' revolves around its namesake protagonist, a bored housewife in a wealthy but emotionally distant marriage to a liberal newspaper editor. The film is a delicate drama of longing, self-discovery and unfulfilled desire, praised for its nuanced portrayal of the female psyche and also for Ray’s direction. It will be screened at 11 a.m. on March 21.
Second on the screening list, 'Kapurush,' will be played on March 21 at 2 p.m. It was released in 1965 and deals with cowardice, regret and missed opportunities, as a Calcutta screenwriter ends up spending a night of quiet confrontation with his former lover and her husband when his car breaks down in the middle of nowhere.
The third movie on the list is a 1963 Ray classic, 'Mahanagar,' and will be screened on March 22 at 12 p.m. It centers on Arati, a conservative middle-class housewife in 1950s–60s Calcutta who takes a job as a door-to-door saleswoman to support her struggling family after her husband loses his job. The film sensitively portrays her growing independence, empowerment and conflicts with traditional family roles amid economic pressures and modern city life.
The 1966 movie 'Nayak' will be screened on March 22 at 3 p.m. 'Nayak' revolves around Arindam Mukherjee, a famous matinee idol traveling by train who gets interviewed during the journey. The film is a sharp psychological portrait of fame, success and self-deception, confined mostly to the train compartment, showcasing Ray’s skill in character-driven storytelling.
The movies highlight a prominent phase in Ray’s career, marking a shift toward contemporary and introspective themes.
