Indian American physician Hansini Laharwani was awarded the Outstanding International Medical Graduate Award by the AMA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American Medical Association, at the 2026 Excellence in Medicine Awards ceremony on June 6.
The award ceremony was part of the AMA Annual Meeting in Chicago, where honorees were recognized for exemplifying the highest values of volunteerism, community engagement and dedication to underserved populations.
Dr. Laharwani completed her fellowship training at Washington University in St. Louis and is an elected member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
She was also honored as the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Resident of the Year in recognition of her outstanding contributions to pathology, education and leadership. She currently represents the state of Missouri in the CAP House of Delegates.

A strong advocate for international medical graduates (IMGs), Dr. Laharwani has been actively involved in national initiatives addressing physician workforce challenges, visa pathways and greater inclusion in medicine. She has also participated in the BridgeUSA Leadership Program, supporting mentorship and professional development for physicians.
Through her clinical practice, leadership and advocacy, Dr. Laharwani continues to improve patient care while working to build a more inclusive medical community, AMA noted in a statement.
Along with Laharwani, eight other health care professionals were honored during the event. In recognition of their achievements, each awardee selected an organization to receive a grant honorarium.
In honor of Dr. Laharwani, a grant was awarded to the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Foundation.
Talking about her win, Dr. Laharwani said on X, "Honored to receive the AMA Foundation's Outstanding International Medical Graduate Award."
She added, "Proud to represent the incredible community of pathologists, who work behind the scenes to help guide patient care every day. Deeply grateful to my mentors, family and friends for their support."
Dr. Laharwani holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
