The City of Appleton in Wisconsin marked Diwali Awareness Day on Oct. 23 at Appleton City Hall, where Mayor Jake Woodford presented an official proclamation recognizing the festival. The event was held in partnership with the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation (GIDF).

The program opened with the lighting of a ceremonial lamp inside the City Hall building. City officials described the gesture as a symbol of community recognition for residents who observe Diwali.

“Diwali reminds us of the universal values of light over darkness and good over evil,” Mayor Woodford said during the ceremony. He added that the celebration also reflects the city’s changing demographics and growing cultural communities. “As Appleton grows more diverse, this celebration honors the vibrant Indian American community whose contributions continue to enrich the social, cultural, and economic life of our city.”

Representatives from GIDF attended the proclamation, including President Rakesh Malhotra, General Secretary Abhinav Raina, and Director of Community Affairs Chetan Natoria. The group has been involved in cultural programming and outreach efforts in the region.

Speaking on behalf of the foundation, Malhotra thanked the city for formally recognizing the festival. “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful people of Appleton and to Hon. Mayor Jake Woodford for celebrating Diwali with us and proclaiming Diwali Awareness Day in this beautiful city,” he said. He added that the recognition “shines a bright light on the values that connect all communities — light, hope, and unity.”

Members of the mayor’s office, including Director of Communications Anindita “Andy” Anaam, also attended the program.

Diwali, widely observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and others across the world, is associated with themes of renewal and community. City officials noted that the proclamation is part of ongoing efforts to highlight cultural traditions observed by Appleton residents.

The ceremony concluded with attendees exchanging Diwali greetings inside the building.
