Bhadreshdas Swami of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha has been honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for 2025 by the Government of India in the field of literature for his work ‘Prasthanachatushtaye Brahmaghosha.’

The award, presented annually by the Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters, recognizes exceptional books of literary merit across 24 major Indian languages and honors writers who have made significant contributions to literature in their respective languages.

Bhadreshdas Swami’s book provides a comprehensive exposition of the Brahma principle, based on the primary scriptures of Hinduism, including the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita and Brahma Sutras, alongside the Vachanamrut, delivered by Bhagwan Swaminarayan.

The book is composed in a poetic style using aphorisms, or sutras, and presents the philosophy propounded by Bhagwan Swaminarayan in a literary form. Published in 2018, the author composed the work under the guidance of the spiritual leader of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, Mahant Swami Maharaj.

This recognition adds to Bhadreshdas Swami’s long list of accolades for his contributions to Indian philosophy.

A Sanskrit scholar and thought leader in Indian philosophy, he holds multiple academic distinctions, including an M.A., Ph.D., D.Litt., and an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) from IIT Kharagpur.

He currently serves as the head of the BAPS Swaminarayan Research Institute and has dedicated his life to advancing Sanskrit scholarship and Vedic philosophy.

He is also the author of ‘Swaminarayana Siddhanta Sudha,’ published in 2022, a Sanskrit treatise that systematically presents the Akshar-Purushottam Darshan, the philosophical doctrine revealed by Bhagwan Swaminarayan.

He is also the author of the ‘Swaminarayan Bhashyam,’ a five-volume Sanskrit commentary on the Prasthanatrayi — the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita and Brahma Sutras — which reaffirms the Akshar-Purushottam Darshan as an independent Vedantic tradition. His contributions have been widely recognized both in India and abroad.

Over the years, he has been honored with several awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian Council of Philosophical Research, the Vedant Martand Sanman from Silpakorn University in Thailand, and the Mahamahopadhyaya title from Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University.

He has also received the Acharya Pravar title from the Uttar Pradesh government and was recognized for Excellence in Philosophy by Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Lucknow.

Additional accolades include the Darshankesari Award and the Professor G.M. Memorial Award from the University of Mysore, as well as the Vedant Prakash Award and Abhinav Bhashyakar Award from Shree Somnath Sanskrit University.

The Shri Kashi Vidvat Parishad formally acknowledged him as an acharya in the lineage of classical Sanskrit commentators.

Expressing his gratitude, Bhadreshdas Swami dedicated the honor to Bhagwan Swaminarayan, whose teachings inspired the Akshar-Purushottam Darshan, and to his gurus, Pramukh Swami Maharaj and Mahant Swami Maharaj.

He said the recognition reflects the enduring relevance of Sanskrit and the vitality of India’s philosophical tradition.
