A new Virginia law, House Bill 2783, took effect July 1, criminalizing the display of Nazi symbols while explicitly distinguishing them from the sacred Swastika used in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, and Native American religions.

The law uses the historically accurate term Hakenkreuz—German for “hooked cross”—to refer to Hitler’s emblem, and clearly states that it is not the same as the Swastika, which represents peace and prosperity for millions of people across the world.
