Masala dosa, a South Indian staple, has been ranked sixth on the global list of best pancakes by TasteAtlas. Indian cuisine also secured the 13th position in the platform’s “100 Best Cuisines in the World” rankings.

The list is based on more than 590,000 user ratings across nearly 19,000 dishes, reflecting aggregated public preferences. Masala dosa received a rating of 4.3, placing it among the highest-ranked savory dishes in the pancake category.

Dosa is traditionally prepared by spreading a fermented batter on a hot flat surface to form a thin, crisp layer. In the case of masala dosa, it is typically filled with a spiced potato mixture and served with lentil-based sambar and coconut chutney.

In addition to masala dosa, two other variants featured on the list. The broader dosa category was ranked 15th with a 4.2 rating, while paper dosa—known for its very thin and crisp texture—placed 35th with a 4.1 rating. The presence of multiple variants indicates the dish’s growing recognition outside India.

TasteAtlas groups dishes like dosa under the “pancake” category based on the method of preparation—batter cooked on a flat surface—even though dosa differs from commonly known sweet pancakes in taste and ingredients.

The top five entries on the list include Latvia’s kartupeļu pankūkas, French crêpes in different variations, and China’s jianbing, reflecting a mix of European and Asian dishes. Within this group, masala dosa stands out as one of the few savory, fermented dishes.

Widely consumed across India as a breakfast item or snack, dosa has several regional variations, including Mysore masala dosa, rava dosa, and onion dosa. Its adaptability has helped it gain popularity in Indian restaurants globally.

Masala dosa has also appeared in earlier international food lists, including those compiled by Huffington Post, and continues to be one of the most recognizable Indian dishes worldwide.
