New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on March 13 signed an executive order establishing the first-ever Mayor’s Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs.

Formally announcing the initiative at an event hosted by the Brooklyn Community Pride Center, Mamdani said that the new office would serve as a central body within City Hall to coordinate policies affecting LGBTQIA+ residents across government agencies.

“Queer New Yorkers deserve to be not just protected, but celebrated in this city,” Mamdani wrote in a post on X. “Together, we will fight for their right to live a life of dignity, safety, and unabashed pride.”

“Today we are not only founding our city’s first office for LGBTQIA+ affairs. We are also appointing our first director,” Mamdani said as he named civil rights attorney Taylor Brown as the office's inaugural director.

He said the office will lead cross-agency policy coordination to ensure services reach LGBTQIA+ residents more effectively. “What we are doing is to create a central office solely focused on the well-being of queer New Yorkers so that their needs may be better met by every city agency across our administration,” Mamdani said.

Mamdani noted that New York City is home to the largest number of LGBTQIA+ residents in the United States but said the community continues to face higher rates of homelessness, job insecurity, and barriers to health care and city services.

“This office will be tasked with leading cross-agency policy design and coordination across government so that no New Yorker is forgotten or ignored,” he said.

Brown most recently served as an assistant attorney general in the Civil Rights Bureau of the Office of the New York State Attorney General, where she led investigations into unlawful discrimination against transgender residents.

Mamdani said Brown will become the first openly transgender woman to lead a city office in New York City history.

The mayor said the creation of the office builds on years of advocacy by community leaders and activists, including Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, who organized support systems for transgender residents in the city.
