Featuring a cinnamon ice cream base with housemade buns spiced with cardamom, black pepper, and star anise, the flavor is topped with a cream cheese glaze—a tribute to classic Philadelphia indulgence.
"This ice cream features a cinnamon base layered with housemade buns filled with spiced honey (think: cardamom, black pepper, cinnamon, and star anise), all topped with a cream cheese glaze—another nod to the city's iconic flavors. This is the Malai version of Pennsylvania classics, and I hope every visit to our shop is as sweet as this ice cream,” said founder Pooja Bavishi.
The Philadelphia outlet is located at Rittenhouse Square at 260 South 18th Street, and is open Sunday to Thursday from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday to Saturday until 11 p.m.
Malai, which figuratively means “cream of the crop,” is an artisanal ice cream brand that draws inspiration from South Asian ingredients, aromatic spices, and the cultural heritage of its Indian-American founder, Pooja Bavishi. Every flavor is eggless, and churned with minimal air, resulting in creamy textures.
Bavishi, winner of Food Network’s Chopped Sweets, founded the brand in 2025, with stores in New York and Washington DC. The Philadelphia launch also coincides with her debut cookbook, Malai: Frozen Desserts Inspired by South Asian Flavors.
