Republican New York Attorney General candidate Saritha Komatireddy challenged incumbent Attorney General Letitia James to a statewide series of debates, urging the two-term Democrat to defend her record before voters ahead of the general election.
In a June 29 statement, Komatireddy proposed holding debates in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, Albany, Binghamton, and New York City, saying New Yorkers across the state deserve an opportunity to hear directly from both candidates before casting their ballots.
"After two terms as Attorney General, Letitia James has made New York less safe and more expensive. Crime has risen, repeat offenders have been allowed back onto our streets, fraud has continued to cost taxpayers billions, homelessness has skyrocketed, and corruption has gone unchecked," Komatireddy said.

"Instead of focusing on the responsibilities of the Attorney General's office, she has used it to pursue political vendettas and personal ambitions. If Letitia James believes she deserves another term, she should defend that failing record before the people of New York,” she added.
Komatireddy said the proposed debates should focus on issues including public safety, affordability, corruption, homelessness, mental illness, and the role of the Attorney General.
"New Yorkers deserve to hear us debate the issues that matter most: crime, public safety, affordability, corruption, homelessness, mental illness, and the proper role of the Attorney General," she said.
The Republican nominee said her campaign has taken her across New York, where she has met with law enforcement officers, crime victims, small business owners, and families.
"I've spent this campaign traveling to every corner of New York, meeting with law enforcement officers, crime victims, small business owners, and families. Everywhere I go, I hear the same thing: people want an Attorney General focused on protecting them – not playing politics," Komatireddy said.
She said she was prepared to debate James anywhere in the state.
"I'm ready to stand on any stage, in any city, and defend my vision for restoring professionalism to the Attorney General's office, partnering with law enforcement, and making New York safer," she said.
James' campaign had not publicly responded to the debate challenge at the time of publication.
Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor and former chief of staff at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, is the Republican nominee for New York attorney general.
James, who has served as New York Attorney General since 2019, won the Democratic primary unopposed in June and is seeking a third term. The two are set to face off in the Nov. 3 general election.
