India's Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra, on Wednesday welcomed President Donald Trump’s decision to nominate Sergio Gor, one of his most trusted aides, as the next U.S. Ambassador to India.

His confirmation hearing is scheduled for Sept 11.

“I welcome that President Trump is sending one of his most trusted aides, Sergio Gor, to serve as the next U.S. Ambassador to India,” India's Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra, said Wednesday.

“This move is viewed as a sign of importance and priority of India-U.S. ties, and a commitment to strengthen the bridges and deepen the bonds of friendship between our two countries,” Kwatra said.

Gor, a longtime Republican strategist and senior adviser, has been a close confidant of Trump and played key roles in his political and post-presidency operations.

His nomination, now before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is being seen as a strong signal of Washington’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with New Delhi.

If confirmed by the Senate, Gor will succeed Ambassador Eric Garcetti, who stepped down earlier this year. The vacancy comes at a critical moment as India and the United States expand cooperation in defense, trade, technology, and the Indo-Pacific region.

The nomination will be taken up alongside several other ambassadorial picks this week.
